News Digest: Fed in Flux: Warsh Confirmed as New Chair Amidst Inflation Surge
May 16, 2026
In a day of high-stakes maneuvering for the American economy, the U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Kevin Warsh to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors just as fresh data revealed a troubling spike in inflation, upending market expectations for 2026.
On Tuesday, the Senate voted 51-45 to approve Warsh for a 14-year term on the Board of Governors. The vote largely followed party lines, with Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) providing the lone Democratic crossover. Warsh will fill the seat vacated by Stephen Miran, placing him on the front lines of monetary policy as the first step in a two-part process to succeed Jerome Powell as Chair.
The confirmation follows months of political deadlock. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) had previously blocked the nomination pending a Justice Department probe into Chair Powell’s congressional testimony regarding headquarters renovations. With that investigation dropped in late April, the path cleared for Warsh, whose final confirmation as Chair is expected on Wednesday, just 48 hours before Powell’s term officially expires on May 15.
The leadership transition comes at a volatile moment. New Labor Department data showed the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose to 3.8% in April, exceeding economist forecasts of 3.7%. This marked a significant jump from March’s 3.3% reading, fueled by a relentless surge in energy costs, which accounted for 40% of the increase.
The core inflation rate, which excludes volatile food and energy, also ticked up to 2.8%. Experts warned that the broadening of price pressures, particularly in services and food, suggests that higher oil costs are ‘creeping’ into the wider economy.
The combination of persistent inflation and a new face at the Fed has shifted the conversation from “when will they cut” to “will they hike.” While the CME FedWatch tool still indicates the Fed will likely hold rates steady in June, the odds of a rate hike by December have climbed to nearly 30%.
As Warsh prepares to take the gavel, he inherits a central bank caught between a five-year struggle to hit its 2% target and a precarious geopolitical landscape that is making ‘transitory’ inflation a memory of the past.
