A dramatic shift in investor expectations and cross-border regulatory pressure is forcing private market managers to completely redesign how they use Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), according to a comprehensive global report released by corporate and financial services provider CSC.
The SPV Global Outlook 2026, which surveyed over 400 senior private market professionals across the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, reveals that the traditional, one-size-fits-all approach to SPVs is effectively dead. Driven by heightened risk aversion, an overwhelming 86% of General Partners (GPs) report a sharp spike in Limited Partner (LP) demands for highly customized, bespoke investment structures.
This push for customization is moving hand-in-hand with a massive surge in single-asset SPVs. The report notes that 82% of GPs have seen an increased preference for these tightly focused vehicles, which investors favour for their speed of execution, clearer direct visibility, and faster access to liquidity in a notoriously challenging fundraising landscape.
However, this wave of customization is creating severe logistical friction for asset managers. Nearly a third of respondents (32%) identified multijurisdictional coordination as the single largest operational burden they face. Navigating conflicting regional regulations, maintaining ironclad governance, and fixing persistent gaps in data transparency across multiple borders are straining internal resources to their breaking point.
Faced with these operational bottlenecks, private equity and venture capital firms are aggressively pivoting their operating models. The study highlights that 73% of GPs have ramped up their reliance on specialist third-party providers. By outsourcing these complex administrative burdens, managers hope to build the scalable, compliant, and data-driven frameworks necessary to appease demanding investors while surviving a hyper-regulated global landscape.
