Hedge funds across the board began 2023 on a positive note with more than 78% of those administered by Citco delivering positive returns in January. A new report by HedgeWeek said these funds achieved an overall weighted average return of 3.6% during the month.

While event-driven funds performed the best with returns of 6.7%, multi-strategy funds were at 4.4%, equities at 3.6% and fixed income arbitrage at 3.3% during January. Only commodities showed a decline of 0.3% during the period.

Takeaway:

Capital flows also turned positive with multi-strategy and equity funds taking the highest share of the new money. They received $1.9 billion and $1.1 billion of net flows respectively. Overall subscriptions of $7.7 billion was in excess of total redemptions that stood at $5.4 billion, resulting in positive inflows of $2.3 billion.
