HFR’s weighted composite index tracking hedge fund returns declined 3.08% last month, taking the industry’s average performance for the first half of this year to about -6%, amid heightened market volatility, the data provider said.

All the four major sector categories – global macro, equity, event-driven and relative value – recorded losses in June, with equity hedge funds being the worst hit, posting a 12.3% loss for the six months ended June 30. While funds in the top decile of the HFR composite index gained 34.6% on average, the bottom decile fell 32.2%, highlighting the wide divergence in returns, HFR noted.
