News Digest: Markets Rattled as Middle East Conflict Drives Oil, Gold to Multi-Month Highs
September 8, 2026
Oil prices surged to their highest levels in weeks as fighting between the United States and Iran escalated sharply. Brent crude pushed past $100 a barrel, breaching the psychologically important mark after the West Asian crisis escalated following a lull. Diesel prices have hit record highs in the U.S. as a result, squeezing supply chains nationwide.
Gold has benefited from the flight to safety, trading around $4,390 an ounce midweek, up nearly 22% over the past year, as investors weighed renewed inflation risk against expectations for the Federal Reserve’s next move.

That move looms large: the Fed holds its policy meeting September 15–16, and sentiment swung hard over the first week of September. Fed officials Christopher Waller and John Williams struck a dovish tone, favoring steady rates, which briefly lifted stocks and pulled Treasury yields down. But a stronger-than-expected August jobs report, 162,000 new payrolls against a forecast of 53,000, flipped the narrative, pushing traders to price in a real chance of a rate hike rather than a cut. The Dow fell over 270 points as yields climbed to their highest since January 2025.
The mix of war-driven oil costs, sticky inflation data, and a Fed caught between hawkish and dovish signals has left equities choppy, with fund managers hedging with gold and short-dated Treasuries ahead of next week’s decision.
